I have been very busy with shows and lecture/workshops:

This March I had a wonderful experience in Lander Wyoming doing a week long residency.   I had a twenty-four piece show in the Lander Library along with a lecture to explain my work.  The Lander School system had me work with their student for five days.  I did my workshops on perspective, drawing and three dimensional geometries. I also did a three hour workshop on 1-6 point perspective at the Art Center.  They brought in the Hands-On show I put together for the Discovery Center in Pierre for young students called UP DOWN AND ALL AROUND.  This was displayed in the Lander Children’s Museum.  It had never traveled outside of South Dakota before.   This hands-on display can be seen on youtube.

Six students studying Math/Art and three faculty members from Marshall University in Huntington West Virginia came to my gallery for a four day of workshop in April.  I used the gallery as a classroom.  It was a great environment to teach in with my examples hanging everywhere.  It sounds like another group will be coming back next year.

I have a one man show coming up in Rapid City South Dakota at the Heron’s Flight Studio Gallery June 1 through the 30^th .

The Rapid City Library will have a 12 piece show of Termespheres from June 1^st through June 30^th.

The Grace Balloch Memorial Library in Spearfish South Dakota has an eight spheres show from May 15 through June 15^th.   I will be doing a video lecture on my work at the Library on May 26^th at 5:30.  I am also doing a workshop with the Kids Club Kids on June 10^th from 9 to 12.

Libraries have been my latest venue for shows, lectures and workshops.   They seem to be a perfect place for people to look while reading their book.  They don’t have wall space but they do have ceiling space which is what I need.

I have a lecture at 2011 MATHFEST, The Annual Summer Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America in Lexington Kentucky inAugust.   While I am there, I will be doing workshops at the LIVING Arts and Science Center of Lexington.

I also have been asked to be a KEYNOTE SPEAKER at the California Art Teachers Association in Bakersfield California in November.  This should be very fun.

The Mova/Termespheres are finally here!

After about three years of exploring the concept, the Mova Globe Company and the Termesphere Gallery have joined together to produce some wonderful new pieces of art. We have put together a great site to see these at

I teamed up with Mova Globes Company and together we have created limited edition, 4.5 inch diameter Termespheres that contain solar cells that cause the spheres to rotate almost magically. The revolutionary device inside the Mova globes compliments the Termespheres perfectly. They are actually a sphere within a clear sphere with liquid between them so the inside one floats. Because they need no batteries or plugs, these revolving three-dimensional environments can be enjoyed and admired anywhere. They even spin in your hands if you hold them.

They are each signed and numbered. In the end we will make no more than 3000 of each one. There are currently two Mova/Termespheres available with a third one coming soon. The PANTHEON and FISH EYE VIEW are the ones we have at this point. FROM THE EARTH is coming soon.

I received 60 of these spheres in the first shipment, 30 of the PANTHEON and 30 of the FISH EYE VIEW. Over the last couple of years I have had a prototype of the PANTHEON in the Gallery. The people who signed up in the gallery to be notified when they arrived were given the first chance at owning one. But as of last Friday, the Mova/Termespheres are available to everyone. As you can tell, I am very excited about this mixture of the Termesphere and the Mova Globe solar motion. It is very cool and people seem to really love them.

New Commission: The Smith Ranch Sphere

I have been commissioned by Nels Smith and his wife Jeanette to paint a 24″ Termesphere of the Smith Ranch. SMITH RANCH SPHERE has been in process for a number of months now. I am working at capturing the feeling of the land and the Smith family who have lived on the ranch since 1909. One of the main focal points of the ranch is Inyan Kara Mountain. Bob Daczewitz his brother in law and I climbed it this summer. One of the reasons was to find a rock on the top that Custer had carved his name into. It didn’t take long to find the carving because when you know Custer, you know he would carve it on the VERY TOP. We found it and also were very impressed with the view from the top. Custer was trying to find a cut across through the Black Hills. I was looking for artistic views for my spherical painting. The mountain is like a large spiral leading to its rocky top. It took us 6 ½ hours to go up and down it but it was a wonderful experience.

This painting will incorporate four different views of Inyan Kara Mountain. It will show up around the sphere like you were traveling around the mountain. Usually when you look in at my paintings you are conceptually looking out. In this case you will be looking in at the mountain but circling it also. I have gone through historical photos of the ranch, special event that have happened there and people such as Nels Smith’s grandfather that was a Governor of Wyoming. It is starting to shape up very well at this point.

New Sphere: Caged

This new sphere takes advantage of the illusion of the sphere looking like a hole or flipping concave. When you first look at this piece you think you are looking at birds in a cage. After some study you realize you are the one in the cage and the birds are outside looking in at you. This video shows it very well. If you find yourself in the cage, I am not sure if you will find a way to get back out. But it’s OK, you should have lots of friends that have ended up there with you too.

Lakota Headmen piece has moved to California.

This painting has an interesting story behind it. After I started this six sided pyramid teepee painting I realized if I were going to include the great Lakota Headmen I should find out from the Lakota elders who they felt were their great headmen or chiefs. Not only was this going to be a painting for me but I also had a commission from the Little Wound High School in Kyle South Dakota to work with art students to build an eight foot replica for their commons area within the school.

One evening, I went to Kyle and met with the elders of the town. They picked who they felt were the Headmen who should be on the painting. It wasn’t just who they felt were great leaders but also who were important historically. When I finished my piece, we used it to project onto the larger format for the school. I worked with the students on the larger piece allowing them to choose the colors they thought fit.

The finished piece was brighter than the prototype but it worked well. One student came up to me with a suggestion of adding their school out the door of the teepee. I thought this was a great idea, connecting the past to the present and the future. He designed the image and painted it in the doorway. This was done in 1999. It still hangs in the common area of Little Wound High School.

Creative Connection 2010

I will be going to Creative Connections again this year in Oberwesel Germany. Creative Connections is a wonderful program offered for the DoDDs High School students. The students compete to attend this week long art camp. 150 students are selected. Teachers are available in theater, drumming, visual arts, and music. I teach spherical thinking but I will include Optical Illusions this year as well. Each teacher has between 12 and 15 students for an intense week. This year it is scheduled for the week of November 14th thru the 19th. I will tell you more on how that works out when I get back.

Dr. Jones says it is now hanging over the family Steinway in the public living room in the President’s Residence. Dr. Jones thought this would be an ideal place because “thousands of people pass through the public rooms of the president’s house every year.”…

Deadwood Lead Arts Council Gallery has a 20 piece show hanging in the Arts Council Gallery upstairs in the Homestake Opera House September 21- October 31.

Flaten Art Gallery, St. Olaf University in Northfield Minnesota has six pieces in a show called “Art from Math- Math as Art” from September 17 through October 23.  I flew to St Olaf to speak and do workshops and be at the opening on the 17^th as part of a Math/Art conference on campus.

Heron Flight Studio is a new art gallery in Rapid City South Dakota that is owned by Linda Clark.  She is featuring many regional artists.  I have five Termespheres on display there.  An Open House for Heron’s Flight Studio is scheduled on October 25^th from 2 to 6 pm.   The address is 211 founders Park Drive, Rapid City, 57701.   Hope to see you there.

The Altitude Gallery in Bozeman Montana has seven Termespheres hanging in the large picture window on Main Street. This is my first exposure in Bozeman.  I am excited about having people in the Bozeman area see my work.

The Spearfish Chamber of Commerce is displaying 36 inch HOLES TO THE WHOLE Termesphere.  This piece was part of the 50 piece One Man Show at the Dahl Art Center this spring.  It then was in the Rapid City Library.  HOLES TO THE WHOLE is one of the more complicated spheres I have painted. The Spearfish Chamber of Commerce has provided a wonderful space to show it!

The Black Hills State University Library has relocated their 36 inch Termesphere PORTRAIT OF A COLLEGE to a great new location.  It now hangs in the Jacket Java Coffee Shop which is part of the Library.  This is a wonderful spot for coffee drinkers to contemplate the history of BHSU in the round.

The trees represent some of the different Freedoms while the in-between spaces of the branches contain images of the people who have helped create some of the Freedoms. The roots of the trees show our Forefathers that help put the Constitution and Bill of Rights together. The Constitution becomes a road that flows throughout the landscape.  Some of the different freedom trees are speech, religion, expression, voting, and equality.    Building organized with six point perspective are flowing into the landscape that represent these freedoms also.

REFLECTING THROUGH

The video I did of REFLECTING THROUGH shows a Termesphere that seems to reach a new level.   If you first realize that the room you are looking at is a total 360 degree view and that the back side of the sphere is conceptually behind you, it won’t surprise you that if the clear areas are mirrors, the reflection you see in them is the true reflection of the other side of the room.  There are a few surprises that happen when you compare the mirrors to the outside of the ball room.

SIX SENSES

There is also a video of a 16” Termesphere, the SIX SENSES.   This uses the six point perspective to show the five senses plus the sense of Intuition.  Each of the six “Senses”: the sense of touch through the fingers, the sense of sight through the eye, the sense of hearing through the ear, the sense of smell through the nose and Intuition through the top of the head is found on a vanishing point.

PERSPECTIVE SPHERE

A new 24” Termesphere helps to explain 6 point perspective. It is entitled the PERSPECTIVE SPHERE.  It shows one point perspective within the spherical painting and show how much of the full sphere that one point perspective system uses.  It then talks about 2 point and 3 point perspective through six point perspective.   I hope this piece will help people understand how my six point perspective builds from traditional perspective systems.

UP IS DOWN…

A 16 inch diameter spherical painting that plays with the concept of What If the horizon of the Earth went back to land rather than going to sky? Both ends of the buildings moving across the horizon only go to down positions. There is no UP in this piece.

GARGOYLES OF ST. DENIS

A 12 inch diameter sphere St. Denis Cathedral in northern Paris. It is one of the first Gothic Cathedrals ever built and was where the kings and queens of France were buried for years.  I decided to ask the gargoyles normally found on the outside of the building to come inside for this painting.
